The United States Women’s National Team began its run through the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup this weekend with a dominant 3-0 win over Vietnam, but they also caused some controversy ahead of the match when the majority of the team refused to sing the national anthem or place their hands over their heart. And one prominent Republican was not happy about it.
In a tweet on Sunday afternoon, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley send a brutal message to the USWNT, blasting the group for refusing to sing the national anthem.
“The US women’s soccer team is living the American Dream. They were born in the freest, fairest country in the world that has rewarded their hard work.
They should remember that blessing & the men & women (like my husband) proudly defending it next time the national anthem plays,” Haley said in a tweet on Sunday afternoon.

The USWNT is currently the No. 1 women’s soccer team in the world ranking and is going for its unprecedented third consecutive World Cup title.
The team returns to action later this week when they take on the Netherlands in a prime-time match where they will look to build on their dominant performance against Vietnam to start the tournament.
