Gary Neville’s tenure as the head coach of Valencia is over just four months after it began. On Wednesday, the Spanish club announced in a statement that Neville was fired in the best interest of the club.

“Valencia Football Club has today terminated its contractual relationship with Gary Neville as first team coach. After carefully analyzing the sporting situation, the Club has decided to make this change in the best interest for the Valencia Football Club overlooking the end of this season. The Club thanks to Gary Neville his work and wishes him the best of luck in the future.”

Neville, 41, replaced Nuno Espirito Santo as the head coach of the Spanish soccer team after his resignation in late November. H didn’t find immediate success with the club, as Valencia struggled with 10 wins in 28 games under his guidance, including only three wins in 16 league games — placing them 14th in La Liga and just six points above the relegation zone. Those numbers were a far cry from Valencia’s 2014-15 season when the club won 22 of 38 games.

The former Manchester United and England defender said in a statement that Valencia’s performance wasn’t up to his or the club’s standards.

“I would like to thank Valencia Football Club, the fans, staff and the players. I would have liked to have continued the work I started but understand that we are in a results business and in the 28 games (W10 D7 L11) they have not been to my standards or to those which are required by this Club”.

Assistant coach Pako Ayestaran, who was hired by Neville in February, will take over as interim head coach for the rest of the season.
