Unless you are James Shields, chances are your Tuesday went much better than Austrian defender David Alaba’s did.

The 23-year-old was in the midst of helping his national squad wrap up a 2-0 victory over Malta, when disaster struck.

Alaba, in a hurried attempt to clear the ball back to his keeper, Ramazan Ozcan, accidentally fired the pass well outside of his range — and into the goal. Alaba, anticipating Ozcan would be waiting in front of the net, did not realize he had shifted directly behind him leaving the goal completely exposed.

Own goals are the worst. The offending party feels terrible about his mistake, and it’s not like the opposition or their fans can rightly celebrate backing into a score like that either.

Luckily, the consequences of this particular goal were almost nonexistent. The match was only a friendly in the first place and Austria held on to win 2-1.
