Since Super Mario Run was released earlier this month, Nintendo has been seeing the downloads rack up like crazy.

As of Friday, the game has hit nearly 50 million downloads, which for a company struggling to find some success and direction recently is quite a feat. Piggybacking off of that, company President Tatsumi Kimishima says that two to three mobile games are on tap for next year too, which reportedly will be a version of Fire Emblem and Animal Crossing.

Even taking out Apple’s 30% cut from Super Mario Run’s revenues, Nintendo could stand to make quite a haul from its mobile ventures compared to 3DS and console titles. Projections have Nintendo making about $14 million from Super Mario Run’s first three days, which of course is less than what they’d make from their own mobile and console games, but considering the lower R&D costs, things tend to cancel out.

The game of course is not perfect, as there has been criticism about the payment structure for the game as well as the simple mechanics of the game. But for Nintendo’s first official mobile game release, it’s a fairly good first effort. They will continue to tweak with the game’s elements to make it more competitive, and it stands to reason that their future releases will be better too.

Expect to see Nintendo continue its foray into the mobile gaming market into the future, and that’s not a bad thing.
