Tiger Woods announced on Tuesday that he plans on withdrawing from the 2022 U.S. Open but still plans to play in the British Open.
This decision comes among reports that several PGA players will be leaving the tour to play for the Saudi-backed LIV Golf International Series, though it does not appear that Woods will be joining that.
“I previously informed the USGA that I will not be competing in the @usopengolf as my body needs more time to get stronger for major championship golf,” Woods wrote on Tuesday. “I do hope and plan to be ready to play in Ireland at @JPProAm and at @TheOpen next month. I’m excited to get back out there soon!”

Woods played in the first two majors of the season, the Masters and the PGA Championship, but had to withdraw from the latter due to lingering injuries.
The reaction from around the golf world has been positive, backing Woods is taking time for himself so he can heal up for future tournaments.

It sucks to not have Tiger Woods playing the US Open, but good on him for taking time for his body.
Golf is a better game with him in it, so cheers to his on-going recovery and can’t wait to see him when he tees it up again ❤️

Turn and wave to the world on the Swilcan Bridge in July Tiger, you have nothing left to prove. Your heart, determination & incredible talent has made billions marvel at your greatness & we are forever indebted. Go rest & enjoy all you accomplished, even these past two majors. https://t.co/Nzdd6IHCxo

Sad not to have Tiger Woods at the U.S. Open but makes a ton of sense he's not playing — it's the most taxing tournament and him hacking it from thick rough doesn't seem like a recipe for success right now. This should give him the best chance to ramp up prep for St. Andrews.

Woods said in recent interviews he has no plans on joining the LIV Golf series no matter how much money they offer to pay him. He seems to be holding true to his word because as he has said in the past, legacy matters, which probably explains why he plans to play in the final major of the year, the 2022 Open Championship, a.k.a. the British Open.
