The New England Patriots open their 2022-23 season in less than a week, but Bill Belichick still isn’t ready to name an offensive coordinator or reveal who is going to call plays. However, he did at least reveal who has the ultimate responsibility: him.
In a press conference on Sunday, Belichick revealed that while “a lot of people” collaborate to call both the offense and defense, he takes responsibility for whatever happens on the field.
“We have a lot of people on both sides of the ball, offensively and defensively, everybody contributes,” Belichick said Sunday according to Pro Football Talk. “Ultimately, I have responsibility for everything that happens on the field. In the end, I’ll take responsibility for that. But we have a lot of great members of the staff. A lot of different ideas come from different areas or a collaboration of ideas. We’ll see how it goes.”
Still, this doesn’t answer the question of who is going to serve as the Patriots offensive coordinator, play-caller, or who will set the game script after the departure of Josh McDaniels after last season – whether it’s Joe Judge or Matt Patricia. And it sounds like Belichick has no interest in answering that question.
“Generally if you were to talk about a situation like that, you talk to the entire staff there and say, ‘Okay, first third-and-one here’s what we practiced, what are we thinking?’” Belichick said. “Somebody might say, ‘Let’s do that,’ or ‘This will be a real good time to do that and then come back with that one the second third-and-one.’ Those suggestions, those ideas, can come from everybody and anybody. And I’d say that’s the way it’s always been.”
So it looks like we’ll have no idea who the Patriots coordinator is this season.
