Former NFL MVP Cam Newton has found himself in the news this week. Newton’s brazen comments about some of the league’s quarterbacks had the talking heads going.

Now, Newton is in the news again. But this time, it has nothing to do with other quarterbacks. Instead, the former Heisman Trophy winner shared a fascinating story. Newton told a tale about how not wearing a tie led to a benching, which spiraled into a humiliating Carolina Panthers loss.

Cam tagged up with Jordan Palmer and Kyle Allen on The QB Room podcast. On the show, Newton discussed the events that led to Newton’s benching in a 2016 game against the Seattle Seahawks.

The franchise’s all-time leader passer joined fellow quarterbacks Jordan Palmer and Kyle “Lovey Dovey” Allen for Wednesday’s episode of The QB Room podcast. Newton, who provided an absolute wealth of perspective on his time with the Panthers, recalled the trip to Seattle in 2016–where he was benched because he did not travel tot he game with a tie.

Yeah, that happened.

Here’s Newton’s account:

Newton, who won the Most Valuable Player award the season prior, was held out of the game’s opening drive. In a sick twist of karma to the powers that be (or power that were), backup Derek Anderson tossed an interception on the very first play of the possession.

After the Seahawks cashed in with an easy field goal, head coach Ron Rivera subbed Newton in for the remainder of the Sunday night showdown. The Panthers went on to lose, 40-7.

It seems a bit ridiculous, but a meddling owner meddling with things isn’t farfetched. Richardson wasn’t regarded highly while he owned the Panthers, so the fact that he might have had something to do with this doesn’t come as a surprise.

The good news for Cam here also is that he’ll likely have more support on his side than his previous takes. Unfortunately, that’s the way it goes sometimes.
