The NFL world is buzzing after news on a star running back emerged on a consequential Tuesday. The New York Giants made a significant move.
Tuesday is the NFL’s Franchise Tag day. Teams have until the end of today to decide whether or not to use the tag to keep a player around for at least one season. Sometimes it’s done to bridge the gap, other times it’s to set up a potential trade. Then, there are the occasions where a team opts not to use it on a particular somebody. Today, that’s the case with the Giants, who appear poised to move on from running back Saquon Barkley.
ESPN’s resident NFL insider, Adam Schefter, revealed the news on Tuesday morning. Schefter posted the news on X, the website formerly known as Twitter.
“Giants are not placing franchise tag on RB Saquon Barkley,” Schefter said.
Giants are not placing franchise tag on RB Saquon Barkley, per sources. Barkley is free to leave.

Barkley scampered for over 5,000 career rushing yards in New York with 35 career rushing touchdowns. He might not have lived up to his lofty pick billing, but that’s not entirely his fault obviously. Barkley has shown tremendous ability when healthy, and he’s on the heels of two very good seasons. One of them, in 2022, helped lead the Giants to their first NFL playoff berth since 2016.
A big-time free agent is now on the market. The NFL world has been buzzing ever since.
