The Jacksonville Jaguars know that they might be without quarterback Trevor Lawrence. So, on Tuesday, the Jaguars sprang for a veteran quarterback to avoid a pitfall.

The Jaguars signed quarterback Matt Barkley. Previously, Barkley was on the New York Giants’ practice squad. But the Jags plucked him off to protect themselves.

Jaguars PR announced the move on Tuesday afternoon.

“The Jacksonville Jaguars have signed QB Matt Barkley to the active roster from the New York Giants practice squad, the team announced today,” they posted. The team announced the move on X, the website formerly known as Twitter.

Barkley hit a bit of a milestone after the Jaguars signed him away. Jacksonville will be the tenth team of Barkley’s career. He’s now been on the Jags, the Giants, the Buffalo Bills twice, the Atlanta Falcons, the Carolina Panthers, the Tennessee Titans, the Cincinnati Bengals, the Arizona Cardinals twice, the San Francisco 49ers, the Chicago Bears and, finally, the Philadelphia Eagles.

Lawrence’s status will likely be up in the air most of the week. He sprained his AC joint, and that, on top of other ankle injuries, has put him in a bind. Jacksonville is falling apart at the wrong time, but signing Barkley is a safe move regardless. He’s proven he’s capable when necessary, and it might well be necessary this week if things don’t pan out.
