The Louisville Cardinals have named their interim coach for their upcoming bowl game and it’s a former Super Bowl MVP.

The Cardinals needed an interim coach after Scott Satterfield left Monday for the Cincinnati job. So they turned to a former player who starred bright in the NFL. Super Bowl 39 MVP Deion Branch will be the team’s interim coach for the bowl game.

Field Yates of ESPN tweeted, “With Scott Satterfield leaving for Cincinnati, longtime Patriots WR and Super Bowl XXXIX MVP Deion Branch will serve as Louisville’s interim head coach for their bowl game on December 17th.”

Branch had served as Director of Player Development prior to the new designation. So he has familiarity with the players and the staff. Or at least whoever and whatever is leftover after Satterfield’s departure.

In two seasons with Louisville, Branch helped lead the team to two Conference USA Championships in 2000 and 2001. He also won two Liberty Bowls and was a two-time first-team All-Conference USA selection.

Funny enough, the bowl game Branch will coach in is the Fenway Bowl in Boston, where Branch played his most notable NFL football. Branch won two Super Bowls with the New England Patriots before he joined the Seattle Seahawks. He returned to the Patriots and was on the Super Bowl XLVI team that lost to the New York Giants.
