Ryan Day’s coaching staff at Ohio State is in the midst of upheaval and it looks like he’s about to lose a critical member of his defense.
According to Football Scoop, Matt Guerrieri, who has been working as the Buckeyes’ senior advisor and analyst on the defensive side, has agreed to follow Kevin Wilson to Tulsa where he’ll be the new defensive coordinator.
Guerrieri joined the Ohio State coaching staff in January 2022 in the role of senior advisor and analyst following 10 years at Duke. There, he started out as a graduate assistant before being named safeties coach and eventually added co-defensive coordinator to his responsibilities. He was named an AFCA Assistant Coach of the Year finalist in 2020 and eventually followed defensive coordinator Jim Knowles to Ohio State from there.
Wilson was OSU’s offensive coordinator but took the Tulsa job a few weeks back. Since then, there’s been quite a reshuffling on Day’s staff, which is sure to continue with the news that the head coach is giving up playcalling duties next season.
As for Guerrieri, it’s an opportunity to strike out on his own and make his own name away from Knowles. So far, it sounds like Tulsa is going to have a solid coaching staff to build around in the years ahead.
