The TCU Horned Frogs and head coach Sonny Dykes are undoubtedly excited to be playing for a national championship on Monday when they take on the Georgia Bulldogs, but even playing for a College Football Playoff title has some disadvantages, as Dykes pointed out this week.

During a press conference leading up to Monday’s game, Sonny Dykes pointed out a problem with the NCAA’s recruiting calendar as it forces teams in the College Football Playoff to juggle recruiting with preparing to win a national title.

“I want to add one thing to that. Look, we were preparing this week for a national championship game and we had six transfers on campus on an official visit. And you’re just kind of like, really? I mean, are we really doing this?” Dykes said this week according to On3.

Under the NCAA’s current calendar, the transfer portal window opens on Dec. 5 – the day after the College Football Playoff field was selected – and closes on Jan. 18. Meanwhile, the early signing period for high school players goes from Dec. 21 to the 23. As a result, coaches preparing for the College Football Playoff also have to worry about finishing their recruiting classes and recruiting the transfer portal.

“And so that’s just the way it is now. And those days were going to be 18-hour days before and the 18-hour days turned into 20-hour days. And that’s the nature of our business,” Dykes said. “Don’t get me wrong. I’m not complaining. I have the opportunity to do something else if I want to.”

While most coaches would love to be in the situation Dykes is complaining about, it’s pretty clear the recruiting calendar could be designed better.
