The South Florida Bulls took their best shot at luring Deion Sanders as their next head coach, to no avail. He’s headed for the top job at Colorado.

While USF had Sanders as their most high-profile choice, they had a great backup plan. Action Network HQ’s Brett McMurphy reported Saturday night that Tennessee offensive coordinator Alex Golesh has agreed to an offer to be the team’s next head coach.

The 38-year-old Golesh doesn’t boast Sanders’ notoriety and his recruiting aura, but he’s regarded as a sharp offensive mind. The Volunteers have led FBS schools in total offense this season en route to a 10-2 record and No. 7 ranking in the latest CFP rankings.

The Bulls have been seeking a coach since firing Jeff Scott in early November after a 1-8 start. He posted a 4-26 record in three seasons leading the program, so there’s clearly plenty of upside for the Bulls under Golesh. And Golesh is already familiar with the American Athletic Conference, having served as co-offensive coordinator for Central Florida in 2020.

College football fans in general seemed to think this is a good hire, but South Florida fans couldn’t hide their disappointment they didn’t get one of the other rumored candidates, from Sanders to Coastal Carolina head coach Jamey Chadwell.

“Seems like a great guy. Hope he does well, we just don’t have time to build. We need to win,” tweeted Gary Cucchi.
