Over the past few years, college football fans have grown quite bothered and frustrated by the “targeting” penalty and the lack of consistency in which it is applied and officiated. And it seems like one prominent United States Senator feels those frustrations the same way the rest of the college football world does.

During a hearing on the NCAA’s name, image, and likeness rules in college sports on Tuesday, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz called out the NCAA and college football referees for the targeting penalty, making it clear that he is not a fan of it and doesn’t really understand it.

“Sen. Ted Cruz says he, like many of the general public, does not understand targeting and “it pisses me off” when his teams are penalized for this,” college football reporter Ross Dellenger of Yahoo! Sports wrote in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.

Cruz is certainly not the only one this way as the targeting penalty has become one of the most controversial penalties in college football over the past few years.

The NCAA has tried to add accuracy to the penalty by utilizing instant replay to review the calls on the field, but it still remains frustrating for college football fans and senators alike.
