The Ohio State Buckeyes need a new starting quarterback this upcoming season with C.J. Stroud heading to the NFL Draft. And as the position battle commences between Buckeye quarterbacks Kyle McCord and Devin Brown, former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer reveals an unfortunate truth: whoever doesn’t win the job will likely leave the program.
During an appearance on his Urban’s Take with Tim May podcast, Urban Meyer pointed out that it’s currently a good situation to have two quarterbacks who could start for the Buckeyes this season, the reality is that once head coach Ryan Day makes a decision, the player that doesn’t win the job faces a critical decision.
“I’ve not talked directly about that to coach (Ryan) Day, but I’m sure that’s on the back of his mind saying, ‘I’ve got two,’” Meyer said during his podcast according to On3. “He feels good about those two quarterbacks, they’ve been around, they’re talented. But what happens once you name a starter?”
Meyer thinks that as soon as Day does name a starter – whether it’s McCord or Brown – the other will enter the transfer portal to seek another opportunity to start elsewhere.
“I had other battles that you just kind of want to hang in there as long as you can because, first of all, you want to be fair to both players and the reality is, especially now, they’re gone,” Meyer said. “The day of a third-string quarterback like Cardale Jones hanging around for four years, that’s not going to happen. They’re going to go to greener pastures somewhere and go play.”
It certainly is a tricky situation for Day and the Buckeyes.
