Leave it to the geniuses at Nike to take one of its most popular shoes and find a way to make it even more comfortable for consumers.

According to a report from Business Insider, Nike has filed a patent for a machine that appears to use steam to customize how a pair of Nike’s Flyknit sneakers will fit a customer’s foot.

So how does this machine supposedly work? In brief, the shoe is put in the steam machine and then the customer puts the show on to allow the shoe to essentially mold itself to the shape of the foot. A machine that essentially does this has already been tested in the past, as the video below shows. Now, Nike may be looking to make this more widely available.

For those who are picky about how their shoes fit on their feet, this is a great concept. No longer will people have to settle for a shoe that fits the best. Instead, they can get a shoe that will fit around their feet when they walk out the door. That is a game-changer. At least, Nike hopes it is.

Let’s be honest, if Nike wants to make this a thing, they will find a way and soon enough rival companies will begin looking for ways to make their shoes fit their customers better using steam as well.
