As Major League Baseball teams across the country go through spring training in preparation for the upcoming 2024 season, it sounds like the Boston Red Sox are dealing with a pretty horrible situation regarding one of their top players.
According to a report from Major League Baseball insider Jeff Passan of ESPN, Red Sox starting pitcher Lucas Giolito could miss the entire 2024 season due to an injury to his shoulder.
“Brutal news: Initial imaging showed Boston Red Sox starter Lucas Giolito likely has a partially torn UCL and flexor strain and could miss the 2024 season, league sources tell ESPN. Giolito, who signed a two-year deal with Boston, may need surgery to repair the right-elbow damage,” Passan said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.

Giolito signed with the team this offseason in hopes of helping improve the pitching rotation. Now, he’s injured before even playing a game.
This is obviously horrible news for the Red Sox who will be down one of their top players for what appears to be the entirety of the 2024 season, and the MLB world had a lot to say about it on social media as a result.
Never ceases to amaze me how fragile pitcher success can be.
Cy Young votes each season from 2019-21, fell off in 2022, then through 21 starts pre-trade had a 3.79 ERA in 2023.
He rocks an ERA near 7 over his final 12 starts, now 2024 is over and 2025 threatened. Sucks. https://t.co/f11Vh5gUh0

Injuries are random and awful in spring training.
Side note — I don’t know how high Giolito was on the radar for the #Royals back in December, but if they would’ve given him the $38M and passed on Lugo/Wacha, I would’ve been so disgustingly unwell right now. DEFCON 1 levels. https://t.co/aFXk48kz7q

If the Red Sox don’t sign Jordan Montgomery now, I will lose it. Absolutely lose it. https://t.co/oIIoEgB6Kc

Needless to say, this is jarring. Sending our best to one of the Rose Rotation Family Members. https://t.co/t5wJD5tpzw

giolito has been healthy for years and now likely needs surgery after being a boston red stocking for 45 minutes. AAAHHHHHHHH https://t.co/UuXCsthTFK

The Red Sox finished last in the American League East division last season and were looking to improve upon that finish this season. Obviously, this injury will not help that pursuit.
