Two Cardinals errors led to the Giants scoring a run. It would be hard for a team to play worse defense than the Cardinals did on this play during Tuesday’s game against the Giants.

If you watch every Major League Baseball game for the rest of the season, it’s unlikely that you’ll see a team execute a play on defense any worse than what the St. Louis Cardinals did on Tuesday against the San Francisco Giants.

Giants second baseman Thairo Estrada reached base on an infield single against Cardinals pitcher, Jake Woodford. Then, on Woodford’s 1-1 pitch to San Francisco’s Blake Sabol, Estrada took off.

Estrada runs well and got a great jump off of Woodford. So, St. Louis catcher Willson Contreras would probably have been better off just not making the throw down to second. But possessing a strong throwing arm, Contreras decided to try.

It was a mistake.

His throw was bad. What happened after was worse.

For those of you scoring at home, there were two errors. Estrada got credit for the successful steal of second base. But he advanced to third on Contreras’ throwing error, then scored on Carlson’s error trying to field the ball.

Major League players are certainly not perfect and make mistakes. But it’s not often that you can watch a play done by Major Leaguers and think that Little Leaguers could have done it better.

But really, could they have done any worse?
