The Milwaukee Brewers are in a great position heading into the MLB Playoffs as the No. 2 seed in the National League. A big part of the reason they’ve been able to get there is pitching. Right-handed reliever Devin Williams was a huge aspect of that. Or at least he was.

The Brewers announced Wednesday that Williams fractured his right hand after punching a wall on Sunday following an evening of drinking after Milwaukee clinched the NL Central.

“After our celebration, I went out to have a few drinks and on my way home I was a little frustrated, upset, and had punched a wall,” Williams told reporters. “I’m pretty upset with myself. There’s no one to blame but me. I feel like I let our team down.”

“If I could take it back, I would.”

Brewers president of baseball operations David Stearns told reporters that Williams’ injury will likely require surgery. However, there is an “outside chance” he could return in time for the World Series if the team makes it that far.

The 27-year-old appeared in 58 games this season, going 8-2 with a 2.50 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, and 87 strikeouts.

In the history of bizarre injuries, this one has to be right up there. And MLB fans and media members certainly had some strong reactions to the news.

Radcliffe’s reaction was especially apt. The Journal Sentinel reporter pretty much called this back in May in a classic case of “there’s always a tweet.”
