On Friday, the Philadelphia Phillies became the latest MLB team to unveil their City Connect jerseys. And just as has been the case for every other team’s reveal, there are plenty of takes flying around.

The jerseys feature multiple tributes to Philadelphia’s history. MLB broke them down in a video which can be seen below.

The video notes that the blue and yellow colors are reflective of Philadelphia’s flag and the lettering is an ode to the Declaration of Independence and Liberty Bell. You can also see the skyline on the inside of the collar, which is blue to represent the city’s working-class roots. The patch on the jersey references Philadelphia’s nickname “The City of Brotherly Love” and also features an homage to the Liberty Bell.

The hat, which has been almost universally praised, is also inspired by the Liberty Bell. The placement of the etchings represents Philadelphia’s historic underground revolutions.

Fans on social media have had a lot to say about the jerseys, both good and bad.

One fan wasn’t impressed, saying, “Once again, Nike has gone with an egregiously ugly design, and tried to make up for it by trying way too hard to hide details all throughout the mess”

Another, though, said, “Okay the symbolism is awesome I’ll admit.”

One fan found themselves in the middle, saying, “I have to say, seeing it altogether….I don’t hate it. Love the hat, the font is still a little meh to me. But I’ll give it a pass. As a uniform it looks solid.”

Finally, one fan said even if they’re bad, Phillies fans will embrace them. “Hats are good. Uniforms STINK. Everyone will hate them so we, as Phillies fans and contrarian jack*****, will start to love them.
