Milwaukee Bucks star almost quit after controversial comments

The Milwaukee Bucks recently signed Meyers Leonard to a 10-day contract with the team. Two years ago, Leonard was with the Miami Heat when he used an antisemitic racial slur while caught on tape playing the video game “Call of Duty.”

The Heat quickly distanced themselves from Leonard and later cut him. Leonard, who later apologized for what he said, almost considered quitting after what took happened.

“I am now more aware of its meaning and I am committed to properly seeking out people who can help educate me about this type of hate and how we can fight it,” Leonard said at the time on Instagram.

“I acknowledge and own my mistake and there’s no running from something like this that is so hurtful to someone else.”Leonard said these past few years have been at times tough.”It’s a mixed bag of emotions, for sure,” he told reporters on Wednesday. “It’s certainly the hardest two-year stretch I’ve ever had in my life, as an adult, as a man.”Leonard also said being without a team these last few years was a “extremely difficult time,” and he called the slur an “ignorant mistake.”

But he seems to be back on the right track and credits his newly formed relationship with the Jewish community and the support of others as the reason he has become a better person.

“I spent some quality time with my family, tried to rehab myself, and feel pretty darned good about where I’m at.”
