While College Football Playoff expansion talks were briefly put on the back burner as conference realignment took hold of the college football world over the past several months, it looks like playoff expansion talks are heating up once again with university presidents taking charge of the matter.
According to a report from Ross Dellenger of Sports Illustrated, the College Football Playoff‘s highest-ranking governing body is expected to hold a vote that could allow for playoff expansion as early as 2024 with a unanimous decision.
Dellenger reports that a board made up of 11 university presidents – one from each FBS conference as well as Notre Dame – is taking matters into their own hands after conference commissioners were unable to agree on a future playoff format over the past several months and years.
Despite increased chatter about the playoff potentially expanding to 16 teams, Dellenger reports that a 12-team model is actually the favorite.
The news is certainly groundbreaking just as the 2022-23 college football season gets underway, and the college football world reacted accordingly with many taking to Twitter to express their shock at the bombshell report.

We are on a collision course with a 12-team playoff. The only variable is time. https://t.co/l1r0P8sDyw

Most fascinating question is whether Big Ten and SEC are willing to hand out automatic qualifiers to Pac-12 and Big 12 to give the leagues they plundered a shot to stay relevant in the short term. https://t.co/4YUlsN76Pe

It would take a unanimous vote to expand the playoff before the current contract ends in 2025. But it’s looking like there’s a possibility.
