The Purdue Boilermakers have become giant killers this season. At 5-3, the unranked Boilermakers already had a top notch upset as they beat No. 2 Iowa 24-7 in Iowa three weeks ago.

This week, Purdue avenged a loss to Wisconsin with a 40-29 upset over undefeated No. 3 ranked Michigan State. In both games, Purdue was in control and while you can argue they’re inconsistent, they have stepped up when it came to facing top ranked teams.

This marks Purdue’s 17th win against a top five opponent as an unranked team. To put this in perspective, the next team on that list is Illinois and they only have 11 wins. In addition, according to The Athletic’s Matt Brown, Purdue is the fourth team in the past 50 years to get two wins against top five teams in a single season as an unranked team. The 2021 Boilermakers join Illinois (2007), Penn State (1983), and Missouri (1978). Purdue also did this in 1960.

With two wins against top five teams, and the potential to get a third against Ohio State next Saturday, social media is taking notice at just what this team is capable of.
