Arizona State has become something of a place where failed NFL coaches get a second chance to prove themselves. If the rumors are true, they might just add another one to the mix in the form of Urban Meyer.
The Sun Devils come into the season with head coach Herm Edwards on the hot seat. In his fifth season, the former NFL coach came out of retirement to take over the program in 2018 and has found middling results since. While the team is coming off an 8-5 season and Las Vegas Bowl berth, there’s also an NCAA recruiting investigation into Edwards’ program that has seen five assistant coaches at ASU lose their jobs, while many people have been calling for the coach to be fired for losing control of the team.
If the season gets off to a rough start or the team doesn’t make a big jump forward, Edwards will likely be fired. And if so, there are rumors out there that the Pac-12 school might consider throwing an offer in the direction of Meyer, who recently returned to Fox Sports.
Even though Meyer’s one season in the NFL was an unmitigated disaster on every level, his college football coaching bona fides are pretty strong. With three national titles across two programs, he would being instant credibility to a program like ASU, trying to stay afloat in the murky college realignment and College Football Playoff expansion waters.
On Wednesday’s Dan Patrick Show, Patrick said that he has spoken with a source who inferred that Meyer might consider coaching at Nebraska and Arizona State (via AZ Central).

“I had some correspondence with my college football source. we were talking about Urban Meyer, could you see Urban Meyer going back into coaching?” Patrick said. “You know what my source said? Paulie (Executive producer Paul Pabst) is onto something with Nebraska.”
