Anthony Richardson Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson (5) runs passing drills during Colts Camp practice at Grand Park, Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2023 in Westfield.

Indianapolis Colts rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson will make his preseason NFL debut this week, giving fans a look at what the team hopes will be its new franchise quarterback, leading the team for the foreseeable future. But nobody really knows what to expect when he takes the field for the first time, including Richardson himself.

Ahead of his NFL preseason debut, Anthony Richardson was asked where he thinks he is in terms of progression. And the truth is, he doesn’t really know because he hasn’t faced any NFL competition besides his teammates.

“Honestly I don’t know because I haven’t gone up against anybody yet,” Richardson said according to Pro Football Talk. “But I feel I’m in a good spot and hopefully I can showcase that Saturday.

“I think I’ve taken a big step regarding everything, whether it’s chemistry, play-calling or even just recognition of a defense. I feel like I’ve grown a lot, but there’s still room for improvement. I feel like I can just keep on pushing.”

Richardson was by far the most inexperienced of the three quarterbacks selected in the first round this year, so it will be interesting to see how he fares during his first live-action snaps against NFL-caliber competition.
