Anthony Richardson Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson (5) runs passing drills during Colts Camp practice at Grand Park, Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2023 in Westfield.

When the Indianapolis Colts selected former Florida Gators star quarterback Anthony Richardson with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, it was widely expected that he would be the team’s starting quarterback immediately. But apparently, Richardson himself wasn’t necessarily expecting the announcement.

On Tuesday, the Colts officially named Anthony Richardson their starter for the 2023 NFL season, but he claims that he was surprised when he heard the announcement.

“Honestly, I was shocked,” Richardson said according to Pro Football Talk. “I’ve been grinding, putting in the work to get the title, but it’s not really all about the title. I’m just trying to make sure I’m ready for the team. Despite being labeled as QB1, I’ve still got other guys in the room helping me to get to that standard. I’m forever thankful for them. I appreciate them and I’m glad I did get the nod and have the trust of everybody in the building.”

Indianapolis Colts team owner Jim Irsay has made it very clear that the team intends to play Richardson early and often to allow him to develop with in-game reps. And it seems like that’s going to be the case from Week One.
