Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers saw their season come to an end on Sunday afternoon, falling to the Detroit Lions in the divisional round of the playoffs. But Mayfield doesn’t seem to want to dwell on the disappointment of the end of the season. Instead, he’s expressing optimism about the future, and making it clear that he wants to be a part of it in Tampa Bay.
During his postgame press conference, Baker Mayfield had a pretty clear message for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as he heads into free agency, expressing a desire to return to the team after having such a strong season in 2023.
“I love this group,” Mayfield said according to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers team website. “I’ve said that all year and it’s authentic. It would mean a lot to me, to bring back a lot of key pieces, to get this back together, to get into Year Two in the system. I feel like we could make huge strides. I would love that. Obviously, we’ll see how it’s going to play out but I can’t say enough about this organization and the opportunity they gave me this year.”
Mayfield had the best season of his career by nearly every metric, finishing the season throwing for 4,044 yards and 28 touchdowns during the regular season. We’ll have to see if the team rewards him with a new contract.
