For years following his retirement from the NFL, Hall of Fame wide receiver Calvin Johnson had a strained relationship with the Detroit Lions after the franchise made him pay back his $1.6 million signing bonus. But in recent years and months, that relationship appears to have been mended a bit, and Johnson recently explained why.

Calvin Johnson has had an improved relationship with the Detroit Lions lately, and he credits one person in particular for that change: Chief Operating Officer Mike Disner.

“I always say Mike Disner’s been a huge part of bringing this thing back together with the team,” Johnson said Sunday according to Eric Woodyard of ESPN.com. “So I’m appreciative of them, appreciative of the whole organization allowing me to have it here and collabing with me in doing that because it’s a heck of an experience for these kids.”

Johnson hosted a high-school football camp at the team’s facility on Sunday and has made it clear that he intends to mentor young star wide receiver Jameson Williams, making it clear that “Anything I can do to help him, I’ll do that and I’ll be there.”

It will certainly be interesting to see how this relationship develops over the years.
