The latest round of political financing reports reveals Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones donated $500,000 to the re-election campaign of Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott.

Jones has been a longtime supporter of conservative political causes and candidates, so it comes as no surprise that he’s supporting Abbott, though a donation this sizable this late in the race is certain to turn some heads.

As mysantonio.com noted in breaking the news, the contribution from Jones is the largest the billionaire has ever made in a statewide Texas election.

The news is also unique in that Abbott is favored to win the election over Democratic challenger Beto O’Rourke. The governor raised $8.8 million in the latest fundraising round, according to the Texas Ethics Commission. Abbott has $3.7 million on hand.

The latest poll on the race, run by the University of Houston, revealed that Abbott currently enjoyed a 13% margin over O’Rourke heading into the pivotal election.

Jones did not respond to mysanantonio.com’s request for comment. His estimated net worth is $15.8 billion. Jones has owned the Cowboys since he purchased the franchise in 1989 for $150. The Cowboys currently have an estimated value of $8.5 billion.

The 2022 midterm elections will be held a week from Tuesday, Nov. 8th, 2022.
