New York Jets' fans watching their team lose to the Miami Dolphins. East Rutherford, NJ — November 24, 2023 — Jet fans late in the second half as the Miami Dolphins defeated the NY Jets 34-13 at MetLife Stadium on November 24, 2023 in East Rutherford, NJ to play in the first “Black Friday” NFL game.

The Miami Dolphins’ 34-13 road win over the New York Jets Friday saw a pretty unimpressive performance from Jets’ quarterback Tim Boyle. The 29-year-old Boyle has been in the NFL since 2018 with the Green Bay Packers, Detroit Lions, Chicago Bears, and now the Jets, but his only previous starts were three in 2021 with the Lions. And he turned in some not-so-stellar highlights Friday, including a Hail Mary pick-six at the end of the first half that got roasted by Prime Video commentators Al Michaels and Kirk Herbstreit:

On the day, Boyle finished with 27 completions on 38 attempts for 179 yards and one touchdown with two interceptions (including the one above). And he was part of an atrocious overall offensive performance that saw the Jets score only one touchdown (their other one came on a pick-six of their own) and post 159 net offensive yards to Miami’s 395. And after the game, New York receiver Garrett Wilson didn’t know how to respond to their struggles:

“I don’t know what to tell the fans. … I’m out of [words]. I’m out. I’m out. I can’t think of anything and I wish I could.”

Well, it appears that head coach Robert Saleh and offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett also can’t think of anything else, at least when it comes to starting quarterbacks. Saleh told media Saturday Boyle will start again next Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons:

Boyle entered the NFL in 2018 as an undrafted free agent following a college career at UConn and Eastern Kentucky. In his senior season in 2017 with the Colonels, he completed 201 of 327 passes for 2,134 yards with 11 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. He lost all three of his 2021 starts with the Lions, and has 100 NFL completions on 158 attempts for 786 yards, four touchdowns, and 11 interceptions to date.

And while Boyle said he was going to “feel dangerous” ahead of his first start for the Jets (a team he signed with in April, was released from in August, resigned with on the practice squad soon after, and was promoted to the active roster of in September), it turned out that danger was mostly to his own team’s chances. (Well, there was also some danger to electronics manufacturer TCL USA on that Hail Mary pick-six, thanks to a promotion that will now see them give away $1 million worth of TVs). But the 4-7 Jets appear set to stick with Boyle for now rather than returning to Zach Wilson or signing another quarterback. We’ll see how that works out for them.
