When the Las Vegas Raiders released Derek Carr, everyone in the league thought the Raiders would target two quarterbacks: Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady.

While Rodgers is still a possibility for the Raiders to sign, Brady took himself out of the running when he retired at the beginning of February.

One person who didn’t seem surprised that Brady retired was Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels.

“That decision really had nothing to do with any other player,” McDaniels said. “It was about what we thought was best at the time for us. I’m not surprised — honestly, nothing would surprise me with Tom. He’s a great friend of mine. Whatever’s best for Tom and his family. In this case, it was to retire. I’m certainly happy for him, and that’s not going to change our friendship.”

McDaniels was Brady’s offensive coordinator while he was with the New England Patriots, which is why many thought that if he decided to continue his career that the Raiders could be in the running.

But Brady made himself clear if he didn’t retire, he would have stayed with Tampa Bay to be close to his kids.

Daniels knows the process of the team finding a new QB is going to be a tough process.

“It’s obviously one of the biggest factors that will certainly impact our season, let alone our offseason,” he said. “But there’s nothing we can do other than go through our process and really do a good job of evaluating our opportunities and our options. … There’s definitely going to be some bodies added at that position, that’s for sure.”
