Russell Wilson might not be the one making the final decision on hiring the next head coach of the Denver Broncos, but the Broncos quarterback apparently contacted the guy he wants coaching him.

According to Colin Cowherd, Wilson legally contacted highly sought-after coach Sean Payton and wants him to come to Denver to fix him. Cowherd revealed on his show that he went to dinner with his fellow Fox colleague and confirmed reports that Payton was “impressed” with the Broncos when they met on Monday while adding the Wilson tidbit afterward.

“The reality with Russell Wilson, most people understand the problem with Russell right now,” Cowherd said. “He’s too isolated. He’s got this chiropractor, and this throwing coach, and his own office. And though it doesn’t bother me, there is a sense, and it’s well reported and well documented now that Russell’s a little isolated from a lot of the young players, young receivers on the team… Sean can fix it. Sean, I know, can fix it. And Russell Wilson has contacted Sean, legally by the way, through channels, he wants Sean Payton. He needs fixing. He knows he needs fixing.”

It makes sense Russell Wilson would want someone like Sean Payton to be head coach. Payton was a former quarterback himself and primarily coached on the offensive side of the ball. He’s an offensive genius, and if he can’t fix Wilson, maybe no one can. And given the Broncos paid a lot of money to have Wilson in Denver, it makes sense to bring in a head coach who can get the best out of their star player. It’s just a matter of getting the deal done, not only with Payton but with the New Orleans Saints.
