Last week, Denver Broncos star quarterback Russell Wilson went viral for all the wrong reasons when it was revealed on social media that he flipped a golf cart when he accidentally drove it into a bunker. Wilson was not injured in the incident, but his pride might have been hurt a little bit. And this week, his head coach tried to embarrass him a little more.

During his first press conference after the team began its offseason program, Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton took a subtle shot at quarterback Russell Wilson during his introductory comments.

“It’s great to see these guys around,” Payton said, regarding the start of the offseason program, according to Pro Football Talk. “Hopefully we can keep the golf carts upright.”

It’s a brutal way to tease his starting quarterback. But as Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk points out, it might be a good way to lead the team from Payton.

“In that little quip, Payton underscored the attitude that will permeate the new-look Broncos. No sacred cows. No special treatment. At least not until it’s earned,” Florio wrote. “Wilson got special treatment last year, but his performance didn’t live up to it. This year, then, he’s just one of the guys. He’s subject to the same criticism, the same sarcasm, as anyone else.”

We’ll have to see how Payton’s coaching style meshes with Wilson.
