It has appeared recently that the Seattle Seahawks are likely to eventually pull the trigger and trade for Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield, ending that long saga. However, according to one report, there’s a new NFL team in the mix that could complicate things.
Mayfield, who has made it clear he won’t return for the Browns even if Deshaun Watson is suspended for the entire 2022-2023 NFL season, has been linked to the Seahawks in recent days, who are not only interested in bringing him on board but also extending his contract. It’s a no-brainer for Seattle, who would otherwise have to go into the year with Geno Smith or Drew Lock, which isn’t exactly inspiring.
According to sports journalist Michael Balko, the Seahawks and Browns almost got the deal done but a “new team has reportedly entered the Mayfield sweepstakes as well.”

The obvious assumption is that the Carolina Panthers are that other team as they’ve long been considered another potential suitor for him. They are looking at a season in which they’re probably going to have to put their faith in Sam Darnold once more, and as much as Mayfield has frustrated some, he’d be considered a big upgrade at the position.
Of course, it could be a surprise NFL team in the mix as well, given that they’ve had a chance to see what all the quarterbacks on their roster can do now and might see Mayfield as a potential upgrade. It sounds like we’ll find out pretty soon if this surprise entrant can make waves or if Baker is heading to the Pacific Northwest as many expect.
