Tom Brady announced his retirement from the NFL on Wednesday morning, a little more than two weeks after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers season ended in the Wild Card round at the hands of the Dallas Cowboys. Brady shot the video himself, sitting on a beach while giving a brief speech. Someone found the part of the beach where Brady made that announcement and is profiting from it — rather handsomely.

Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times shared a photo on Friday, showing an eBay auction for some of the sand where Brady made his announcement.

Naturally, this made a lot of people laugh.

Indeed, the person is proving to be rather smart. At the time of Stroud’s tweet, there were no bids. That would soon change.

Not long after, the top bid was at over $1,000. Shortly thereafter, it was over $15,000.

The initial bid was made at 7:28:32 Eastern time on Friday night. The $15,000 bid was made less than 10 minutes later, at 7:37:27. So, things are moving fast.

For the sake of the person who ends up making the winning bid, we can only hope that this retirement actually sticks. Otherwise, he or she may look back at spending five (or more) figures on sand as a complete waste of money.
