This week, the Las Vegas Raiders and Tom Brady agreed to a deal that would make Tom Brady a minority owner of the team, pending confirmation from the rest of the league’s owners. The move led some to speculate that the now-retired quarterback could potentially serve as an emergency quarterback for the team with the health of Jimmy Garoppolo in question. But there are rules specifically against that happening.

As league insider Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk explains, Tom Brady would need a unanimous vote from the league owners in order to be allowed to join the team’s roster after becoming an owner. And it’s quite unlikely he gets that vote.

“The problem, as one or more teams likely will see it if Brady ever tries to play, is that Brady’s status as an owner makes him essentially an extra member of the roster in waiting. Someone who could be signed on an emergency basis who has been attending meetings and practices and knows the offense and the systems and can get quickly up to speed,” Florio wrote for Pro Football Talk.

So if Brady does indeed become an owner of the Las Vegas Raiders, there’s very little chance he suits up for the team after that, regardless of Garoppolo’s health.
