In the Kansas City Chiefs loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday afternoon, Chiefs’ wide receiver Kadarius Toney was flagged for offensive offsides when he lined up in the neutral zone on a play that ultimately resulted in a late go-ahead touchdown. But teammate Travis Kelce is defending him.

During the play, Travis Kelce caught the pass from Patrick Mahomes, then realized that Kadarius Toney was open on the other side of the field and threw a backward pass to him, allowing Toney to score an easy touchdown. But the play was nullified due to the offensive offside penalty on Toney.

While the Chiefs were upset about the penalty, believing that the referees should have warned Toney before throwing the flag, Kelce said that Toney should not have been lined up that way to put the referees in that position.

“You can say what you want about him being in the neutral zone here and there. He lined up like that all game, didn’t get warned, blah blah blah, don’t call it in that position. You can’t put it in the refs’ hands in that position,” Kelce said according to Pro Football Talk. “We talk about plays like this all the time, especially in critical moments.”

But that doesn’t mean Kelce is holding the mistake against Toney. Kelce went on to defend his teammate

“I love KT. If we get the opportunity again I’m going to throw that [thing] right to his chest again. Hopefully it gets there,” Kelce said. “I got all the faith in the world in that dude. He’s one of our best players. He’s one of the best players we’ve got with the ball in his hands. You turn on the film, you watch what he does when the ball is in his hands and you can’t tell me you don’t want that guy on your team. Everybody hating on KT right now, I’m not trying to hear that. You can [freaking] miss me with it. I’m trusting in one-nine every time he’s out on the field.”

Toney has made a few costly mistakes this season, but the Chiefs are going to need him to perform well if they’re going to defend their Super Bowl title.
