Former president Donald Trump will seek the presidency again in 2024, he announced Tuesday night from his Mar-a-Largo resort in Florida.

Trump lost the 2020 presidential election to Democrat Joe Biden.

How Trump’s declaration will affect the Republican Senate campaign of Herschel Walker remains to be seen. Walker’s aides asked the former president to campaign elsewhere during the closing hours of last Tuesday’s midterm elections. Walker’s aides have also made it clear they welcome the campaign support of popular Republican governors like Brian Kemp of Georgia and Ron DeSantis of Florida.

Many Republican operatives asked the president to delay his announcement until after next month’s Georgia runoff Senate election. Trump, in his typical fashion, ignored the requests and went along with his plans anyway.

While announcing his return to politics, Trump went out of his way to praise Walker:

“Despite the outcome in the Senate, we must not lose hope,” said Trump after Democrats retained control of the chamber in 2023.

“We must all work very hard for a gentleman and a great person named Herschel Walker—a fabulous human being who loves our country and will be a great United States Senator. Herschel Walker, get out and vote for Herschel. He deserves it. He was an incredible athlete, and he’ll be an even better Senator. Get out and vote for Herschel Walker.”

Walker, for his part, blasted Trump and the GOP for what he called “deceptive” fundraising tactics concerning money raised for his campaign not making it into his coffers.

The Georgia Senate runoff election is set for Dec. 6th.
