The Indians fell victim to a bizarre extra ball situation

When you watch the above video, you might not notice anything strange. Yan Gomes doubles to right, Lonnie Chisenhall scores, David Murphy gets picked off at third after going around the bag too far.

But look behind second base as Zack Cozart is receiving the throw – there’s a second baseball just casually rolling on the grass. Murphy assumed the ball lying on the grass was the game ball as opposed to one that accidentally came onto the field from the bullpen.

The umpires probably should have called the play dead once the second ball came into the playing field, but they didn’t, and the Indians were forced to pay the price as their rally was stifled.
