UNC Wilmington reaches the CAA championship game on a dropped pop-up by Northeastern.

The UNC Wilmington Seahawks are going to the Colonial Athletic Association baseball championship game, and they got some help from Northeastern Huskies’ defense.

With Saturday’s game tied 5-5 and two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning, UNCW’s Kevin Pittara hit a pop-up that it appeared would send the game to the 11th.

However, Northeastern third baseman Danny Crossen dropped the pop-up, allowing the winning run to score from second base.

Crossen originally appeared to think the ball was going to land in foul territory, and perhaps the wind played tricks on him.

For the Seahawks, it capped off a big comeback victory after trailing 4-0 into the bottom of the sixth inning.

And for the Huskies, well, that’s a heartbreaking loss- and a nightmare moment for Crossen.

Northeastern will have to do its best to quickly forget about the loss and take care of business against Elon on Sunday. The winner of that game will have to play again later in the day, facing in the UNCW in the CAA title game at 5 p.m. ET.

The Seahawks are the CAA regular-season champion, and they’re trying to reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2019.
