The season Bill Belichick is leading with the New England Patriots is extremely unfamiliar territory for him. The team stands at 4-11 and he wouldn’t give a prominent answer about his future with the team beyond this season.

That doesn’t mean he’s not aware a decision could be made.

According to the Boston Sports Journal’s Mike Giardi, citing sources, Belichick has “expressed doubt about his future in New England” to Patriots staff members “at various points over the last few weeks.”

Belichick’s been asked countless times about any discussions he’s had with the front office following such a disastrous season.

“I think any questions you have for Mr. [Robert] Kraft, you should ask Mr. Kraft,” Belichick said on Dec. 18 during an appearance on WEEI in Boston. … “I mean, I don’t know,” Belichick said according to Pro Football Talk. “I don’t sit around and listen to talk radio and read stuff every day, so I’m going to do what I do and prepare the team to get ready for Denver.”

Belichick’s contract situation is an interesting one, however.

Despite his worst season, he signed a multi-year, lucrative extension during the offseason — so he could be locked in. There aren’t many details about the contractual obligations, but many are saying CEO Kraft wouldn’t hesitate to go in a different direction.
