The Derek Carr era is officially over for the Las Vegas Raiders.

The Raiders officially released Carr on Tuesday, ending a nearly 10-year relationship with the one-time franchise quarterback.

“Raiders officially informed QB Derek Carr that he has been released, per source,” ESPN’s NFL insider Adam Schefter reported. “Team released him before $40.4 million in his contract became guaranteed today. Carr is now a free agent and is expected to draw interest from the Saints and Panthers, amongst others.”

Carr played collegiately with the Fresno State Bulldogs. The Raiders originally selected Carr in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft.

Carr was the fourth quarterback selected in the draft behind Blake Bortles of the Jacksonville Jaguars, Johnny Manziel of the Cleveland Browns, and Teddy Bridgewater of the Minnesota Vikings.

Carr denied a trade request to the New Orleans Saints earlier in the month.

The NFL world was quick to react to the news:

“Carr leaves the Raiders as the franchise’s all-time leader in yards, completions and touchdowns. Carr also finished the 2022 season with the 3rd-highest interception rate (2.8%), the 2nd-lowest red zone completion pct (42%),” wrote ESPN Stats & Info.

“Reminder: the Raiders and Derek Car did a four-year contract extension SIX MONTHS AGO. Contracts in the NFL are more like ‘suggestions,'” Andrew Brandt wrote.

“Commanders are gonna sign him and bench Howell and eventually let Howell go and then Howell will go on to be Super Bowl MVP with another NFC East rival,” Luke Thomas wrote.

“Still an unfathomable tragedy that the Raiders won’t get the picks they could get from a starting-quality QB on an insanely malleable deal. Not even a comp pick. Disastrous way for it to play out for them,” Luke Braun wrote.

“One relatively quick and cost-effective purchase of a new Carr could save the Jets a lot of Rodgers-driven drama over the next few months,” wrote Jim Geraghty.

Carr did not immediately comment on the release.
