The Pittsburgh Steelers officially have a starting quarterback again…at least for the moment.
For the first time since 2004, someone other than Ben Roethlisberger will enter the NFL season as the starting quarterback in Steeltown, and, at least for now, that person is Mason Randolph. That’s according to general manager Kevin Colbert who told the media on Monday that if the season started today, Rudolph would get the call.
Colbert says the Steelers will add QBs: “We know we’re going to add to the position. I can’t tell you how at this point. We will go to camp with four. If we had to start today with Mason as our starter, let’s go. We’ll try to build the best team around him.”

“We know we’re going to add to the position,” said Colbert. “I can’t tell you how at this point. We will go to camp with four. If we had to start today with Mason as our starter, let’s go. We’ll try to build the best team around him.”
Colbert made it clear that the Steelers aren’t making their final plans just yet and they intend to consider all their options. Head coach Mike Tomlin had previously said this as well.
“Both guys, Mason and Dwayne [Haskins], have had their moments, but they’ll have to prove that,” Tomlin said in January.
“All options are on the table,” said Tomlin when asked if the team would consider adding a free agent or drafting a quarterback.
Backing Rudolph for the moment makes a lot of sense for the Steelers. The 26-year-old has been with the Steelers for four seasons., playing in 17 games and starting 10 of them. Pittsburgh is 5-4-1 in games he’s started and while he may not be the face of the franchise in the future he would be a dependable option to start with. And if the team drafts a long-term option to challenge him and Haskins, that could make a lot of sense as well.
Steelers go to camp with a rookie QB, veteran signed in FA, Rudolph, and Haskins. Would sound good to me. https://t.co/XdpWofRciX
