The NFL world could have a quarterback controversy brewing within the Carolina Panthers organization. Former Cleveland Browns starting quarterback Baker Mayfield may have been named Carolina’s starter before the season, but after Mayfield’s struggles this season, Panthers head coach Steve Wilks would not commit to him remaining the team’s starter when he returns from injury, which could open the door for former first-round pick Sam Darnold.

With Mayfield leading the way, the Panthers have just a 1-4 record. If the team decides to make a switch at quarterback, Sam Darnold told ESPN that he will be ready.

“Whenever I get my opportunity I’ll be ready to roll,” Darnold said. “I’m not too worried about anything else other than that.”

While Darnold would obviously like to become the team’s starting quarterback, he said he takes no joy in watching Mayfield and the team struggle.

“It’s a tough situation that we’re all in, you know, losing,” Darnold said. “I’m not looking forward to whether I’m the backup or whether I’m starting, losing sucks.”

Even if the Panthers do elect to try Darnold as the team’s starter, it won’t be this week as Darnold remains on the team’s injured reserve and is not expected to be elevated before this week’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. With both Mayfield and Darnold sidelined, P.J. Walker will be the team’s starter once again on Sunday.
