The San Francisco 49ers have added a quarterback.
NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported Tuesday that the 49ers signed veteran quarterback Kurt Benkert to their practice squad. Benkert is now third in line in the team’s QB rotation. Brock Purdy is the new backup to Jimmy Garoppolo, who assumed the starter’s role after Trey Lance suffered a season-ending injury in the 49ers’ victory against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 2.

The 27-year-old Benkert has spent time with the Atlanta Falcons and Green Bay Packers, but he has yet to throw a pass in a regular-season game. In fact, he’s only played in one game, for Green Bay last season.
Garafolo reports the 49ers also worked out Mike Glennon, Garrett Gilbert, and Kevin Hogan in their emergency QB audition Tuesday.
Why is this important? Because Garoppolo has a history of injuries. In fact, Garoppolo underwent shoulder surgery this spring. It’s asking a bit much to rely on Purdy — best known for earning the title of “Mr. Irrelevant” as the last selection in the 2022 NFL Draft — to be the only other man in San Francisco’s QB room.
Garoppolo and the 49ers (1-1) face the Denver Broncos on the road in Sunday night’s game.
