One of the most saddening stories of the 2022-23 NFL season was about Houston Texans rookie wide receiver John Metchie lll, who missed the entirety of the season after being diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia. However, the Texans revealed a huge update on Metchie that suggests he may be ready to return to the football field soon.

Texans general manager Nick Caserio discussed Metchie’s health on Wednesday, saying that the former Alabama standout may be ready to return for the start of the team’s offseason program.

“I’d say there’s a chance that he’ll be ready for the start of the offseason program,” Caserio said via HoustonTexans.com. “I think there are still some things that he has to complete or go through. Quite frankly, it’s amazing what he’s done to this point.”

As far as how Metchie looks physically, Caserio added that Metchie is actually in better shape than he was when he was drafted by the organization in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

“He actually looks better now than he did when we drafted him in the spring,” Caserio added. “He’s improved his strength, he’s improved his lower body strength. His attitude has been great, even though he’s been dealing with a lot of things medically.”

It’s truly unbelievable that Metchie is even thinking about playing football at the moment given the circumstances, and Texans fans took to social media to offer their take on this amazing news.

“That’s great… him returning next season is like having an added draft pick,” one fan tweeted.

“Incredibly happy for Metchie & his family,” another fan wrote.

This is certainly welcome news at the right time considering star wide receiver Brandin Cooks has been adamant that he wants to be traded this offseason.
