Urban Meyer’s tenure with the Jacksonville Jaguars couldn’t have gone much worse than it actually did. The NFL experiment lasted all of 13 games before he was fired. Along the way, there were rampant reports and rumors of discontent, arguments with coaches, physical altercations with players, and more, not to mention the viral incident involving him and a young woman at a Columbus bar.

There were also instances where it didn’t seem as though Meyer knew everything that was going on around him. That was driven home by a report by The Athletic that noted, via a source, that Meyer once asked a Jaguars staffer: “Who’s this 99 guy on the Rams? I’m hearing he might be a problem for us,” referring to Los Angeles Rams star Aaron Donald. Per The Athletic, “multiple sources” said Meyer was unfamiliar with other notable NFL players such as Deebo Samuel and Jamal Adams.

During an appearance on “The Tim May Podcast” this week, Meyer scoffed at that report.

“Someone told me that,” Meyer said. “I’ve heard silly things in my life. You shouldn’t even address things like that, it’s so silly.”

While it certainly does seem absurd for an NFL coach to be unfamiliar with league stars like Donald, Meyer also demonstrated enough confusion and misunderstanding with how the league worked that it didn’t sound unreasonable either.

Meyer also noted during the appearance that he was currently in discussions with Fox Sports about returning to their Big Noon Kickoff studio. At least now he can focus on college football players and remember their names instead.
