Jackson State head coach Deion Sanders can talk about how he’s focused on the Tigers and their current season, but that doesn’t seem to be stopping rumors and reports about his potential interest in FBS head coaching opportunities.
According to 24/7’s Carl Reed, “sources close to Sanders say he’s been in discussions with power-brokers at both Colorado and South Florida about their coaching vacancies.”
Sanders has also had his name thrown in the mix for the Auburn job and the Nebraska job, but has denied interest in those and any other FBS job so far.
While Colorado might not sound like it makes a lot of sense given Sanders’ recruiting footprint, it would be a Pac-12 job where he could bring on good assistants and make a mark outside of the spotlight of the Big Ten or SEC. Meanwhile, South Florida seems like an ideal landing spot for the Florida State grad who has done wonders attracting local talent to Jackson State.
Sanders still has a lot of reasons to stay in Jackson, especially as he leads the Tigers toward the FCS Playoffs. However, if the FBS offer starts lining up for his services, coupled with the massive contracts that come with them, it’s going to be hard to imagine he’ll say no forever.
