Second-year, highly-touted quarterback Quinn Ewers was named the starter for the Texas Longhorns before the start of the college football season over returning starter Hudson Card, but he’s missed significant time this year after suffering a shoulder injury in a Week 2 loss to the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Ewers is returning from his injury on Saturday afternoon for the Red River Showdown game against the Oklahoma Sooners, but head coach Steve Sarkisian doesn’t want to put too much pressure on Ewers ahead of the big rivalry matchup.
“Well the biggest thing I tried to do with Quinn was say — ‘hey, trust the guys around you, trust the play calls, trust what we’re doing to try to get you into a rhythm,’” Sarkisian said during an appearance on ESPN’s College GameDay pregame show on Saturday morning, according to On3. “He doesn’t need to be a hero today. Just needs to operate the offense and execute.”
Ewers has missed the past two games for the longhorns. In his place, backup quarterback Hudson Card took over, going 2-1 with a loss against the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Card returned to the team this season after starting most of last season, but he the starting quarterback competition to Ewers this offseason after the second-year player transferred to Texas from Ohio State.
