A Massachusetts woman is heading to prison after biting off a piece of a police officer’s ear.

The Boston Herald reports that 19-year-old Emma Wiley was sentenced to a total of four years in prison on two charges stemming from a late night fight and the bite itself.

Wiley got into a fight with another woman outside a bar around 1 am. And after resisting arrest at first, she chomped down and bit off a chunk the size of a “nickel or quarter” on officer Jessica Rondinelli’s ear, requiring her to undergo a couple surgeries.

In addition to the prison time, Wiley will have three additional years probation and must undergo psychiatric evaluation. Wiley claims that she has been diagnosed with multiple mental disorders including bipolar disorder, depression and obsessive compulsive disorder.

Obviously, mental disorders added with alcohol makes for a unsurprising conclusion like this but that clearly doesn’t make it an excuse for this behavior. The judge, along with Wiley’s defense attorney seemed to have a similar mindset. She’s 19 and will be out of prison at 23. After prison, there will be plenty of time to settle down, get her mental issues in order and try to live a better life before it’s completely wasted.
